FAQ on PCP Appointments, and a message from Chair KC Hanson

Due to the resignation of Senator Margaret Carter, and the process that incorporates the votes of Precinct Committee Persons (PCPs) to select a replacement, there has been an enormous amount of interest in becoming a PCP!

Over 120 applications were received and processed by MultDems Adminstrative team members Sue Hagmeier, Susan Silodor and me, and we are thrilled at the interest exhibited by members of the NE and N Portland community.

We welcome all our new and returning friends, and hope that they will stay with us as we work to make people's lives better in the community, in the state and in the country.

We'd like to answer a few questions below (Read More) For other questions, please go to our interactive DISCUSSIONS board on our Facebook page (Multnomah County Democrats)

Thanks for your interest, and we hope to see YOU soon!

FAQ RE: PCPS

What is a PCP?

PCP stands for Precinct Committee Person. A PCP is a community organizer in his or her own neighborhood, especially during election season. This role is critical to winning both local and statewide elections. A PCP can be more effective by talking about politics with neighbors all year long.

A PCP is also a member of the Multnomah County Democratic Central Committee, the highest authority in the County Democratic Party. It conducts the business of the Party, decides on positions taken and elects representatives to the State Central Committee. When there is a Democratic vacancy in the Legislature, the members in that District meet in a Nominating Convention to nominate candidates for appointment to fill the unexpired term.

PCPs are elected in their precincts in the Primary Elections in even-numbered years. Between elections, PCPs may be appointed by the Central Committee to fill vacancies.

Can I still apply to become a PCP?

Yes, you can do that anytime. However, in accordance with our bylaws, applicants must be published at least 7 days prior to the Central Committee meeting at which their appointment will be considered, and they must be received in time to allow for publication. The next opportunity for appointment from new applications will be at our Oct. 8 Central Committee meeting, and that application deadline will be Sept. 27. It is now too late to become a PCP for the September 17 Nominating Convention.

What if I applied, but cannot make the September 10 meeting. Can I still be appointed?

ONLY if you have attended a Multnomah Dems’ Central Committee Meeting within the past 6 months and signed in as a guest. Otherwise you must be there at the meeting at which your application will be considered. If you are not there, your application will still be considered active, and you can be appointed at a later Central Committee meeting that you attend.

Who is my contact in the Party for questions?

Go to the Discussions board on our Facebook pages to ask your general questions. Specific questions may be emailed to vicechair@multdems.org

Note: It is critical that we have full contact information for you. Email is our primary way of supplying members with news and notifications, and phone is the backup. One simply can't participate fully without this connection.

I filed my application, and I am on the published list. Will I get specific notice of the Sept. 10 meeting and information regarding the Nominating Convention?

If you have completed all the contact information on your application, you will receive an email or phone call over the weekend regarding the Sept. 10 meeting. If you are then appointed at the Sept 10 meeting, you will receive your Nominating Convention notice at that time. (Current SD 22 PCPs will receive Convention notice through the mail.)

Where is the published list of applicants?

It's both on this website (See "September General Meeting and click on the link.) and published in the Discussions Board on our Facebook page.
