Respect

A proposed resolution will be presented at the next quarterly meeting of the State Central Convention which I believe is badly needed by the Multnomah County Democrat Central Committee. This resolution, proposed by by the Lincoln County Central Committee, notes the large number of newly activated individuals that are trying to become involved in the Oregon Democratic Party and the need to assure that they are treated with respect by our organization as they attempt to negotiate our rules and procedures. This resolution is badly needed in Multnomah County. Several months ago I had a friend who was very interested in becoming involved with our organization. This person, an attorney, has been very active in progressive politics and in community organizations and had asked to observe the meeting of our Executive Committee. I invited him to come as a guest. Unfortunately, before the meeting even got underway he was treated rudely and disrespectfully. He took a seat at the table and was rudely ordered by one of the functionaries to move away from the table. There may indeed have been reasons for him and other non-voting members of the committee to allow the voting members to sit together at the table but this could have been requested tactfully and respectfully. I was not even given an opportunity to introduce him at this meeting. He told me later that he was very disappointed and wanted no further involvement with our organization. This is not the only time that such disrespect has been shown to guests and sometimes to members of the committee. At the most recent Executive Meeting, for example, a visiting PCP was pointed ignored at the time that visitors were allowed to introduce themselves. I am extreemely saddened and embarrassed that this kind of disrespect is shown at our meetings. I urge our delegation to vote for this resolution and to live by its spirit at all future meetings and events. David Jackson District Leader Districts 27,31,33, 35

What is the resolution?

Do you have a line on the actual text of the proposed resolution? I would be very interested in reading it. Making the party more welcoming and encouraging for new people is very very important.

Proposed Resolution regarding respect and openess

This is the resolution being proposed by the Lincoln County Central Committee for the upcoming DPO meeting in Medford: WHEREAS, A large number of new individuals became active in the DPO and County Committees during the 2004 election season; and WHEREAS, many of those individuals have remained active in the party and are taking on responsible roles; and WHEREAS, the Party will benefit greatly from the ideas, energy, and skills of these idividuals; and WHEREAS, the rules and bylaws guiding the process of the DPO and committees are complex and may be perceived as limiting and unfriendly; NOW, THEREFORE, THE DEMOCRATIC PARTY OF OREGON RESOLVES AS FOLLOWS; Section 1. Meetings of the DPO and Committees should exhibit a tone of openess, support, and interest in the contributions of new individuals. Section 2. I strongly support this resolution and urge our delegates to support it. David Jackson
