On Friday, September 14 City Club welcomes General Merrill "Tony†McPeak for a Friday Forum on the Iraq War and the role of the U.S. military in the Middle East. The one-time chair of Oregon Veterans for Bush, McPeak has voiced strong objection to the Bush administration's military policies in the region.
As President Bush prepares to ask Congress for an additional $50 billion in military spending, and the Iraqi civilian death toll tops 70,000, (according to one independent monitoring group), McPeak will focus his comments on solutions to ending the war and bringing U.S. troops home. He will look at both the short- and long-term problems facing the U.S. and offer his thoughts on how we can withdraw troops safely and diplomatically. McPeak will also discuss how to rebuild America's diminished international standing.
McPeak was chief of staff of the U.S. Air Force from 1990-1994, during the build up to Operation Desert Shield, and assisted in the strategic planning for Operation Desert Storm. McPeak is a frequent commentator on local and national television, including appearances on public television's News Hour with Jim Lehrer.
